    This is a "read only" version in open access meant for the public. The texts of the exercises are available as suggestions of possible activities on the topic, but the visitors cannot answer the questions to obtain feedback, since the buttons meant to open spaces for the answers are not active. 

    In 2019-2020 the course was only in the first semester with a possibility to take it during the second semester for the number of students who could not get registered.
    In 2020-2021 we renewed a number of questions and in 2021-2022 the course became a full year course with 2 different semesters on different topics.

    
    

    The course for students is on the SIAL moodle (Service d'Innovation pour l'Apprentissage des Langues).

    To register for the course, students should go to the SIAL website: https://ent.sorbonne-universite.fr/lettres-etudiants/fr/mon-ufr/sial.html and connect with their passwords.

    2014 was the tercentenary of the Georgian era - 1714 was the year of George I's accession to the throne, and the event was commemorated in several exhibitions, some of which include innovative digital supporting material (see 'The Georgian Tercentenary' below).

    1. READ important 18^th century novels related to the specific cities in the website and to the representation of life in a city in those days. The access to all texts mentioned is ONLINE so that the student has immediate access to them and becomes able to find and search online.

    2 . DISCOVER major 18^th century novelists and COMPARE Defoe, Fielding, Smollett, Jane Austen in novels where cities play a major role -which is why Tobias Smollett is particularly present since his characters travel through the cities of Bath, London and Edinburgh studied in Georgian Cities.

    3 . ANALYSE the descriptions and complementary approaches of life and customs at the time.

    4. EVALUATE through comparisons with paintings, or historical, or economic approaches the degree of « realism » in the novels.

    5. PUT LITERATURE IN PERSPECTIVE with other arts and with history so as to be able to judge famous quotations like Johnson's Who is tired of London is tired of life ...echoed by Lydia's in Smollett Who is tired of Bath …and show how complementary it is not to isolate the study of literature as such but to put it in context with all arts in the 18^th century.

    6. EXPERIMENT computerized literary analysis or textual analysis, as the article by Anne Bandry explains in 'Space and Emotions' and as Liliane Gallet-Blanchard shows in a theme like « Water in Humphry Clinker ». And if possible they will have access to LION ( Literature Online) for a more general view of Literature in the 18^th century.
