Comparisons have always been one of the activities of scholarly research; since we have material on three major cities - Bath, London and Edinburgh - and on other trading towns, we have now progressed far enough for you to relate them, and we shall be able to compare their social structure and their activities.

Digital media offer new approaches in this field:

  • hypermedia, which we have already studied, which allows us to bring together documents on several topics through hyperlinks; here you will look at the pages on 'population' or 'medicine' in several cities
  • search strategies: finding online documents corresponding to a topic, using appropriate keywords and evaluating the academic standard of the results
  • and now databases, on which we focus today, which can be presented as tables and graphs;  we shall first study existing databases and learn to create tables and graphs; in the next lesson we shall learn how to create a database.

In the Georgian Cities website, use the following chapters:

Society in Bath - more particularly the sections 'Population' and 'Social life/Medicine'

London society - more particularly the sections on 'Population' and 'Hospitals'

Edinburgh society - more particularly the sections on 'Population' (including Trades of the Street) and 'Medicine'

and the synthetic section Topics/Society - more particularly the sections 'Demography' and 'Health and poor relief'
