The text below is a 'read-only' question; it is meant to give visitors an idea of possible exercises. Registered students should use the other version of the course "Georgian Cities: S2".

Exercise based on the chapter on daily life in the Georgian Cities website.

Visit a period house museum: N°1 in Bath, or the Geffrye Museum in London, or the Georgian House in Edinburgh, or Pickford House in Derby, or Fairfax House in York (you know the URLs on our Georgian Cities website from previous exercises); select one of the rooms.

  • Write a paragraph on three pieces of furniture or decoration, including one evoking other places or countries; state which part of your essay comes from your own observation, which one is based on the museum documentation, and which part is derived from external sources - the online course, other websites or books (give full references). If you note differences between these sources, mention them and attempt to explain them.
  • Observe the lighting effects - windows and light sources (bear in mind the lighting of the period), and comment on the management of light in the rooms; you may find an example concerning Pickford's house in Derby. Compare with the use of matching elements and lighting effects in country houses.

Skills:

  • observation and recognition of Georgian decoration
  • comparison of documents and sources
  • listing of references
