Digital images and interactive effects: interpretation
If you need definitions of the different types of exercises or activities to be submitted on moodle, look at the User's Guide..
After working through the Overview page of the Unit ('Image and Society: Interactivity') showing how one image can combine two periods - canal and rail - , study how a similar message can be conveyed by interactivity:
look at the example of interactive images of Kirkstall Lock on the Georgian Cities website (Urban Growth/Transport Networks/Canals and the link on 'retrospect' in the section 'Images of canals' ); the topic being the illustration of transport history, interaction is appropriate.
You have several uses which may help you study the typology of such images:
- rollover image showing 'before and after' views by Turner, the mediaeval abbey, and the bridge over the canal with road, and abbey in the distance
- rollover with 'before and after' alternating between engineer's project map and retrospective engraving
- image map with clickable thumbnail leading to new page of details
- map with hidden layers revealing an engraving of one of the places when button clicked
Debate on the use of interactive effects in the website: how are rollover images, image maps, layers, used for different purposes? would other visual interpretations have been possible?
Skills:
- critical awareness of web interface options
- debate on critical issues
