This course will focus on writing by Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) British writers of the 20th and 21 Centuries. We will study a variety of genres (poetry, short story, novel) by writers of African, Afro-Caribbean and Asian descent and will analyse the ways in which questions of (in)visibility, agency, violence, race, gender, sexuality and class issues intersect and are explored. The various contexts in which this poetry and prose was produced will necessarily be considered. Beyond these issues, we will pay particular attention to the singular aesthetics developed by the authors and will investigate how these texts have impacted the contemporary British literary and socio-political landscape.
